Welcome to the Chen Lab, led by Dr. Shanting Chen. Our lab provides an engaging environment for undergraduate and graduate students interested in tackling prominent health and educational disparities among racial/ethnic minority populations, with a specific emphasis on adolescent development across diverse contexts.
The Chen Lab takes a biopsychosocial and life-span developmental approach to understanding how life experiences “get under the skin” to shape individuals’ development across psychological, physical, and academic domains. Our work places particular emphasis on cultural and ethnic/racial diversity. Our projects examine a wide range of developmental outcomes, including socioemotional well-being, academic achievement, health behaviors, sleep, and physiological stress responses (e.g., cortisol, skin conductance, allostatic load). We aim to understand how these outcomes are shaped by multiple contexts—such as family, peers, schools, social media, and neighborhood environments.
