Welcome to the Chen Lab, led by Dr. Shanting Chen. Our lab provides an engaging environment for undergraduate and graduate students interested in tackling prominent health and educational disparities among racial/ethnic minority populations, with a specific emphasis on adolescent development across diverse contexts.
The Chen Lab focuses on studying the development of adolescents across psychological, physical, and academic domains, paying special attention to cultural and ethnic/racial diversity. Our projects investigate a variety of developmental outcomes, such as socioemotional well-being, academics, health behaviors, sleep, and stress responses (e.g., cortisol, skin conductance). We seek to understand how these developmental outcomes are influenced by various contexts including family, peer, school, and neighborhood environment. We are particularly interested in understanding the dynamics surrounding cultural and ethnic/racial diversity, exploring issues such as ethnic/racial discrimination, ethnic/racial socialization, and identity development.
